DAC President

SUSAN SHERTOK

DELAWARE ACCORDION CLUB PRESIDENT

"I was born in 1951 in the Bronx, New York. I had one musical uncle, Louie, who played several instruments and inspired me. My family always watched the Lawrence Welk Show every week. When I was 8 years old, I remember seeing an accordion player at a party and I was thrilled and determined to learn how to play it.

I took piano lessons at age 10 and accordion lessons at age 12 for a total of 8 years on both. I studied the accordion at Joe Biviano's Studio in Manhattan for a few years. I won 2 trophies in New York for my age group (16 and 17) - coming in 3rd place in a competition. I majored in music at Lehman College in the Bronx.

I joined the Delaware Accordion Club in 2001 and in a few years I became the secretary and treasurer of the club. I became the president after the founding president, Joe Oberly, passed away. I taught music in nursery school and entertained at libraries and nursing homes. I lead 2 choirs: The Songbirds at the Newark Senior Center and the choir at Temple Beth El in Newark. I also play in the Klezmer band at the Temple.

2023 marks the Delaware Accordion Club's 25th anniversary. Music is the universal language and we love to play and promote the accordion for everyone we meet."
